Junior Summer Handicap Shield

Awarded to the junior winning the Summer Handicap.

Staged on a Monday evening, the summer handicap has been expanded from 2016 into a biathlon, comprising running and throwing.

During the summer term we will run a series of six running and throwing competitions (weather permitting), with the overall winner being awarded the Summer Handicap Trophy at the Junior's Awards Evening.

Each competition is staged during the Monday Athletics Session with athletes running round a course marked out on the YMCA playing fields and throwing beanbags.

Runners are set off according to their handicap times, a third of the way round they stop to throw a beanbag into a hoop, run again for another third of the way, stop to throw another beanbag into another hoop, then run to the finish. All this is then repeated a second time, with points being awarded in relation to the athlete's finishing position.

The best three scores over the series will be used to determine the overall winner.

Every athlete, irrespective of age, sex and ability, has an equal chance of winning this competition which is more about commitment and improvement than ability.

We hope to return in 2023. Watch this space...
