Where a handicap was an estimate for a new or lapsed runner they only score one point but their handicap for next month will be based on this time and qualify for a full score. A season's best earns two bonus points. Please check your statistics on both tables and notify me of any errors.

The opening race on our return to the longer summer course was certainly an eventful one. Firstly, congratulations to the clear winner Catherine who had something of a breakthrough run to better her handicap by over three minutes and, understandably, looked all-in at the finish line!

The club record books were dramatically re-written when all three men's course records were broken. Nigel T. finally succeeded in breaking Tim's long-standing course record on its fifth anniversary and, naturally, took Steve M.'s vet record as well while newcomer Harry had yet another thrilling run to eclipse Jake's junior record by over four minutes.

Usually I make a fair estimate of new runners' potential times. However, in Elspeth's case my judgement was woeful and I drastically underestimated her likely time. With about ten minutes to go before the winner was expected back I was strolling down the YMCA driveway towards the finish when I spotted Elspeth there. Assuming she'd retired I carried on strolling only to discover Elspeth, after starting from scratch, had sped round the course in a very creditable 36 minutes to finish eleven minutes ahead of anyone else and I wasn't even there with the watch to time her!

There were also gutsy performances by the two ladies at the back of the field. Susanna had needed to fix a puncture on her way to the club and after arriving a few minutes late for her start time leapt out of her car and straight into the race. Dawn I know is still not fully recovered from a recent virus infection and, like me, was tired after just returning from a four day walking holiday but she too was determined to take part and I trust you'll agree the sporting spirit shown by these two is something we should all aspire to.

Thanks to Terry and his assistants Layla and Ellie for helping at the finish and Dawn for the promised fruit pies she baked in a rush in the brief time we had at home after travelling back from our break.

Please note, as this was the first run of the new season there are no bonus points awarded this month.
